Diane McCarthy, Chair
Director, Telecommunications
CGA Board Member (January 2010-Present)

Diane McCarthy is Senior Vice President of Verizon’s Network Field Operations, leading central office and technical facility operations for Verizon’s wireline network, along with special service and CPE field operations for Verizon’s wholesale and enterprise customers worldwide including underground and aerial cable systems within those markets. Prior to 2008, Ms. McCarthy led domestic special services operations as Senior Vice President of Customer Experience responsible for Verizon’s wholesale and enterprise markets and brings over 25 years’ experience in advocating the importance and managing the impact of commitment to damage prevention from the customer perspective. She was recently appointed 2009 Corporate Woman of the Year by Garden State Woman magazine.

Ron McClain, Vice Chair
Director, Oil
CGA Board Member (2009-Present)

Ron McClain currently serves as Vice President, Engineering & Operations for Kinder Morgan Energy Partners. Prior to this position, Ron served within Kinder Morgan natural gas pipeline segments and has 35 years of experience within the disciplines of communications, automation and control, compression and product measurement. Recently, Ron created a training program within KM called Right-Of-Way College, where damage prevention personnel from across the country are trained to protect the public, employees and the environment.

John Komidar, Treasurer

CGA Board Member (2010-Present)

John Komidar is the head of Travelers Construction and Oil & Gas Risk Control. His career has spanned the breadth of construction safety and construction risk management. Mr. Komidar is responsible for leading and managing a group of 120 Travelers Construction/Oil & Gas risk control specialists throughout the United States who focus their safety/risk management services on large and small contractors by providing the construction and Oil & Gas industries with customized products and tailored services.

Mike Stayton, Secretary

CGA Board Member (2012)

Michael B. Stayton is President & CEO of United States Infrastructure Corporation (USIC) and was a founding shareholder of USIC which acquired SM&P Utility Resources, Central Locating Services and Consolidated Utility Services to form the largest utility contract locating firm in the United States. From 2002-2007, he served as Chief of Staff and Chief Operating Officer for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the largest humanitarian agency in the world. Prior to his tenure at WFP, Stayton held positions with NiSource from 1995-2000 including President of IWC industries; President and CEO of SM&P Utility Resources; and Senior Vice President of Energy USA Commercial Group.

Jim Barron, Past Chair
CGA Board Member (2001-2005, 2007-Present)

Jim Barron is President and Owner of Ronkin Construction, an underground utility contractor in Joppa, Maryland. He founded Ronkin Construction in 1978. Mr. Barron was an original member of the Steering Committee of the “Common Ground Study” and served as the CGA’s first Chairman. He has served 14 years on the National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) Board of Directors and was a member of the NUCA Executive Board for 10 of those years. Currently, Mr. Barron is chairing a Maryland Stakeholder group that is reviewing Maryland Damage Prevention law.

Kevin Cripps
Director, Excavator
CGA Board Member (2012-Present)

As Chief Operating Officer and member of the board of Distribution Construction LLC,  Kevin is responsible for overseeing the construction operations of the company’s diverse disciplines relating to natural gas pipeline distribution systems installation, maintenance, and rehabilitation. As COO he will help the company continue to refine best practices across all areas of the natural gas pipeline distribution systems business while striving to promote Distribution Construction primary objectives of customer satisfaction and the professional growth of their employees.  Since 1995, he has held a number of key positions within the company including Vice President of Safety Administration and the Operator Qualification (OQ) Training and Evaluation Program.   Kevin represents the company through participation in industry-related organizations, associations, and events. He has served as President of the North Carolina Utility Contractors Association (NCUCA) and is a member of the board of the National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA). He is also a contributing member of the Southern Gas Association (SGA), American Gas Association (AGA), and Midwest Energy Association (MEA). 

Tim Felt, Past Chair
CGA Board Member (2002-Present)

Tim Felt is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Colonial Pipeline. Mr. Felt is an active industry leader having served as past chairman and Executive Committee member of the Association of Oil Pipe Lines (AOPL), past chairman of the American’s Petroleum Institute’s (API) Pipeline Committee and is a current member of the API Board of Directors. Prior to joining Colonial, he was President and CEO of Tulsa-based Explorer Pipeline for nine years. Mr. Felt served as Chairman of the CGA Board from 2008-2009.

Robert Fronczak
Director, Railroad
CGA Board Member (2010-Present)

Robert Fronczak is currently Assistant Vice President Environment and Hazardous Materials for the Association of American Railroads (AAR). Prior to joining AAR, Mr. Fronczak worked for HNTB, an architecture and engineering consulting firm. At AAR, his responsibilities include the development and coordination of industry policy related to risk management and environmental and hazardous materials issues. Mr. Fronczak previously held positions with Milwaukee Road Railroad and Radian Corporation.

Dan King
Director, Gas Transmission
CGA Board Member (2013)

My King is currently Vice-President of Engineering and Asset Reliability for TransCanada and TransCanada's Chief Engineer. In this position Mr. King is responsible for ensuring the reliability of TransCanada's physical operating assets. Mr. King has more than 30 years of experience in the Pipeline industry designing, building operating and maintaining natural gas and oil pipelines in Canada, the US and overseas.

Don Kopczynski
Director, Electric
CGA Board Member (2013)

Don Kopczynski is vice president for Avista Corp. and vice president of operations for Avista Utilities. He began his career with Avista in 1979 as an electrical engineer. He has broad experience in utility and energy operations, including areas of customer service, generation and production resources, fuel cells and fiber optic deployment.  Kopczynski earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Idaho. He earned a master’s degree in engineering from Washington State University, a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Gonzaga University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Whitworth University.  Kopczynski is chairman of the American Gas Association Operating Section and member of the Transmission Expansion Planning Policy Committee of the Western Electric Coordinating Council. He also serves on the Executive Advisory Board for the Washington State University College of Engineering and Architecture.

Patti Lama

CGA Board Member (2007-Present)

Patti Lama, Manager of Contract Construction and Program Management at Portland General Electric, has 30 years of diversified electrical utility experience. Ms. Lama has been involved in the underground facility damage prevention arena for 15 years. She was an active participant in the legislative committee that rewrote the dig law in the state of Oregon and served on the Oregon Utility Notification Center Board for nine years. Ms. Lama was a participant in the original “Common Ground Study” and has been an active member since CGA’s inception.

Jim Narva

Jim Narva is the Executive Director of the National Association of State Fire Marshals where he is responsible for a number of programs, including the Excellence in Pipeline Safety Program and the emergency responder training program, Pipeline Emergencies.  He is the former Wyoming State Fire Marshal and has been involved in the fire service for over 25 years in operations, prevention,  and management.   He holds a BS from Eastern Oregon University and is a graduate of the Harvard University Trade Union Program.

Paul Preketes, Past Chair

Paul Preketes was a founding director of the CGA representing the Gas stakeholder group from 2001 to 2007. During his time on the Board, Paul has served as Chairman of the Board and Treasurer. Paul currently serves as Chair of the Governance Committee. Mr. Preketes retired from Consumers Energy Company in January 2009 as Senior Vice President of Energy Delivery after 36 years of service. He was responsible for strategic planning, asset management, budgeting and engineering for the utility’s Gas and Electric transmission and distribution systems.

John Robertson
Director, Engineering/Design

John has more than 30 years of experience and is recognized as a leader in the field of Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE). He is Vice President of SUE Services at Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson, Inc. (JMT), a multi-disciplined consulting firm providing a full range of engineering, architectural, and related services throughout the United States. As part of JMT’s continuing commitment to damage prevention, John often speaks on topics such as “SUE, what is it and why you need it” and “The Engineer’s/Designer’s role in damage prevention”. John was an original member of the Common Ground Study and served as the CGA’s first Director of Engineering/Design.

Candace Schnoor
Director, Equipment Manufacturing
CGA Board Member (November 2010-Present)

Candace Schnoor is the Director of Public Affairs for the John Deere Construction & Forestry Division and John Deere Power Systems. In this position, Ms. Schnoor works closely with these divisions and her colleagues in John Deere Public Affairs Worldwide to develop and pursue public policies important to John Deere, its employees, dealers and customers. One such policy is excavation safety. Most recently, Deere partnered with CGA to ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Aug. 20, 2010 and helped sponsor “National 811 Day” on August 11, 2009 by partnering with rental companies to distribute 811 materials.

Massoud Tahamtani
Director, State Regulator
CGA Board Member (2007-Present)

Massoud Tahamtani has worked with the Virginia State Corporation Commission since 1980. In his current position as Director of the Division of Utility and Railroad Safety, he administers the Commission’s Railroad Safety and Gas and Hazardous Liquid Pipeline Safety Programs. Mr. Tahamtani is past Chair of the National Association of Pipeline Safety Representatives (NAPSR), represented the States on the Federal Government’s Damage Prevention Quality Action Team and served on the Linking Team of the original “Common Ground Study.”

Noel Thompson
Director, Public Works
CGA Board Member (2011-Present)

Noel Thompson is an excavation safety veteran, having managed the City of Louisville public rights-of-way during his tenure as Executive Administrator of the City’s Public Works Department He has worked as a consultant for several wastewater utilities and a design-build engineering firm, and currently consults for Thompson Resources, based in La Grange, KY. Thompson is Past President of both the American Public Works Association and its Kentucky Chapter. He served on Kentucky Underground Protection, Incorporated’s (now known as KY 811) Board of Directors for 13 years, as its President for four terms and its Interim Executive Director. He was active in Southeast One Call Systems (SOCS) and One Call Systems International (OCSI). He is a past co-chair of CGA’s Membership, Marketing and Communications Committee.

Vic Weston, Past Chair

Vic Weston is the President and CEO of Tri-State Boring, Inc. (1975-2010) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Mr. Weston is an original member of the CGA Board of Directors and currently serves as the Board Chairman. He previously held the positions of CGA Vice Chair and Treasurer. Mr. Weston is also a long-time member of the Associated General Contractors of America and former Treasurer of the organization. In 2007, he was recognized as a member of the CGA Hall of Fame.

Corey Willson

CGA Board Member (2008-Present)

Corey Willson has over 20 years of experience with the 3M Dynatel Locating and Marking business. During his time at 3M, Mr. Willson has held leadership positions in Manufacturing, Marketing and Business Development. He led the 3M initiative for GPS mapping in the locating field and was recently awarded a patent for a GPS interface to a locating device. Mr. Willson has been a featured speaker at numerous industry conferences and has conducted training seminars in US, Asia Pacific, Latin America and Europe.
